After last weeks post hopefully your wheels are turning on how you can make your space function for you. If you missed it catch up here or click th picture below!
This week is all about adding the touches that make your house feel like a cozy, comfortable, and beautiful home. If you are starting fresh, settling into an entire house can be bit overwhelming. Especially if you try to swallow the entire elephant at once. I have developed a few quick tips to make this task a little less daunting.
Start with one room, or corner, at a time and make a few of these changes. Even if they are temporary it will immediately make your house feel like home. Weather you live in a rental, your first house, or your forever home this guide will help you turn your house into a home.
Oh my goodness, talk about a simple transformation!! I found some velvet curtains on amazon for a steel! The before photo is from closing day. For a more dramatic look I love floor to ceiling curtains, hung high and wide. It adds such an elegant touch to any space and immediately makes it feel more polished and complete.
If you are in a rental or temporary home window treatments are hands down one of my favorite ways to cozy up a space. Bonus, you can always bring them with on your next adventure.
If you are not loving your current space, this is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to give it a face lift! Here are a couple common pain points and easy solutions using just some rugs and pillows.
Still have the couch from college, but its not in the budget to replace it just yet?
Get some throw pillows, in varying sizes and textures, with a coordinating throw blanket draped over one arm. Furniture is just like that ugly sweater, with the right accessories it works!
Are you hating your current floor situation?
Layer some rugs, it will draw the attention away from the drab floors. Then by adding some earrings (aka throws) on the furniture, your eye will pull away from the floors and into the space.
Open living spaces are absolutely amazing for life, but they can pose a challenge for interior styling.
Using area rugs, you can really define individual spaces. This will create a natural way for your eye to break up the space. Rugs can also help ground your furniture, so it doesn’t appear to be floating in a lake of flooring.
Hands down this is the number one tool in my arsenal! The versatility of paint is unmatched. I have literally painted almost every surface in one space or another. Plus it is almost always the most cost effective solution. There are a ton of house flippers who earn majority of their revenue with perfectly placed paint!
How pillows and throws are the jewelry for your sofa; Art, Pictures, and Greens are the accessories for your walls and shelves! Almost all of my art is family pictures or DIY projects. What an affordable way to space and add a personal touch!
I wrote an entire blog post here on how to create a cozy bed. Every time we move I style our bedrooms first. There is something about starting and ending your day in a space you love, that just feels good. Especially when I have the rest of the house torn apart with projects our bedrooms provide a retreat.
In my last post here, I referenced low hanging fruit. Light Fixtures and hardware both can be swapped out in minutes, but make a huge impact. These are like the glasses in the wardrobe. When they are dated they stand out like a sore thumb. With the right selection they can blend right in or be the star of the show.
Don’t wait until your house is “done” to make memories. A home is never really done, it should always be evolving and growing with us. Creating a home is not about the finish line, but about the process.
Don’t wait to live life there!
Invite your friends over in the middle of the chaos. Host the ladies group from church. Take pictures in the dated kitchen. Take a break from projects to enjoy a sunset. Bake the cookies.
At the end of the day these are the memories that make it a home!
