I have been a rearranger my entire life. Even back to my middle school days I would move everything around in my room every time I cleaned it. I am just never going to be one of those people that has a house frozen in time. With growing boys and changing needs our home evolves with us. It is a constant experiment of needs and solutions.
During one of our coffee chats my husband and I decided to swap our toddlers room with the guest room. Jax’s room had a great bay window and lots of spacious. It was also located right by the front door and above my husband den. We would panic and dash anytime the door bell rang during naps or after bedtime. We also had a stretch of bedtime tantrums that rumbled through the house. It literally sounded like a gym class was taking place above the den. Our guest bedroom on the other hand was cozy aka small, but tucked into the back corner of our house. It was quiet and right next to the bathroom. Perfect for a potty training Toddler. At his age he is only in his room to sleep and we all NEED him to sleep. 😉
It was the perfect time to transition to a big boy bed and refresh his decor. I wanted to keep in the same color scheme with the Blue, Teal, and Teal accents. We had some staples and neutral pieces that made the move like his hamper, dresser, rug, and nightstand. I found this puppy picture on clearance at Home Goods and it was the inspiration behind the entire room. Between his nursery and his brothers old decor I had a lot on hand. I was able to refresh this entire space including the bed and mattress for under $360!
Here it is! Welcome to this updated cozy toddler bedroom. All of the shoppable links are at the bottom of this post.
Originally I had planned to put the head of the bed were this dresser is, and stumbled across the current furniture arrangement as I shuffled it around the room painting. There isn’t a ton of square footage in this space so I love that you have some room when you walk in.
This mid-century dresser was a $80 find at one of my favorite local shops. It is solid wood and crazy sturdy. I was eyeing it for a few months while I was pregnant. I knew if I had a boy this would make the perfect dresser/changing table.
This Canvas wall art set is actually a quick FREE DIY project. We had these old comic canvas pictures in my oldest son’s room a few years ago. I used some acrylic paint I had on hand to give them a quick face lift and a more modern look. This is such a great way to re-purpose old or affordable art.
This Lamp has traveled around. Originally it was purchased for my desk at work, transitioned to my oldest T’s room, and is now nestled on the dresser here. This faux succulent was steal at Gordman’s years ago. Hobby Lobby’s Spring shop line was a hit this year! I found this cute little bull dog and blue basket on clearance. The basket is perfect for housing the books on repeat. We transitioned this little sound machine from the nursery. I love the neutral color! We have used it EVERY SINGLE night since Jax was born.
I found this little Zinus modern bed on Amazon for $160. To be honest I was not expecting the best quality considering the price. I figured for a 35 pound toddler it would work. This thing is SOLID. Jax climbs and jumps all over this thing and it doesn’t budge. Plus all of the parts fit into the head board for moving or storing! I had it put together and made in under an hour.
I was really tempted to buy a beddys comforter set for this bed. I love how easy it would be for him to make his bed himself and it mimics his sleeping bag he loves so much! We are still working on potty training at night and I just cant wrap my head around the $250 price tag until we are out of the bed wetting stage. Someday….Maybe…….Until then we up-cycled his brother navy and white stripped comforter, teal throw, and grabbed a few new throw pillows. In all honesty he still sleeps on top of all the bedding in his sleeping bag.
We had this cute Midcentury night stand was a $35 target find for the nursery. It had a small scratch on the backside of the table and was already on clearance. If you ever find damaged items even if they are already on clearance target will usually still discount the price. I have done this a few times. Typically you have to take it to the service desk to get the discount. The clock was another hobby lobby find. I really wanted to keep this room bright and crisp with pops of color.
This little corner still may have some tweaks….I reused these painted cardboard letters, rocking chair, and hamper from the nursery. This rocking chair was actually my mothers when she was a girl. I love that my kids were able to use it too. As our book collection grows I thought about putting a small ladder shelf below his name. What do you think?
I have a problem….I always rush curtain purchases and then purchase the too short options in the stores. If you live near IKEA consider yourself lucky they have long curtains for days, but most of our local stores only stock the 84″panels. I have made them work, but like flood paints they just don’t fit right in most cases. Great news, I found local places that stock the 96″ panels! These green gems were found at Home Goods for $20 a pair. I also found some stocked at Hobby Lobby. This particular pair had silver grommets and I already had this black rod on hand. I folded over the edge and used curtain clips to hold in place. You can’t even tell these panels have grommets.
