Laundry has never been on the top of my skills or bucket list. I genuinely dreaded each part of it. Who knew such a simple task could become so tedious as you occupants under your roof. My heart is pounding just thinking about it.
Since Adam and Eve we have been covering our parts. The laundry process has only gotten more complicated s
ince. Us mommas, tend to do the heavy lifting on this front. Although, there was a stint early in our marriage when I was banned from the laundry room…… In true Cassie nature, I had a habit of starting the wash and forgetting it for DAYS without drying. #adultfail 🙋🏻♀️
This spring life just piled up on me like a gang of high school football players. I was spent and stressed. I literally threw my hands in the air . Which led me to find ways to simplify all of this randoms stuff that keeps causing stress. Laundry and its impact on our routine were in need of a solution. Life is way to extraordinary to worry about laundry.
After discussing it with my amazing tribe of momma’s, I realized I wasn’t the only one with laundry fatigue and stress. The most challenging part was clearly not washing/drying, the modern machines do that work. Thank the LORD I wasn’t born before washing machines or I may have joined a nudest tribe. My consencus was the steps of dividing everything up, folding/hanging, getting every last stitch tucked back away, and avoiding wrinkles.
I spent the last few months tweaking our routine, and I literally don’t even think about it anymore. <happy momma dance here> Hallelujah The past few months of stress free laundry have been blissful!
It is simplify 101! I have to do this regularly or two circumstances occur…. 1. One of my children squeezes themselves into an outfit two sizes too small or covered in stains. I cringe, squeal, and encourage another “option”. 2. I try on 17 outfits that don’t fit me or feel good. In either case these annoying garments ends up in the hamper after 36 seconds of use. My best advice on this one is to be HONEST with yourself!
This isn’t always easy. Clothes can muster up emotions in us. When its time to part ways remember the item served its purpose. Sell, trade, donate. It provided you a warm feeling at some point. It feels just as good to share those warm fuzzies with someone else. Ps this concept doesn’t just apply to laundry.
Once you survive the great purge. This will help stay on top of those items. I looooooove containers of any sort, and use them ALL over my house. Anytime those cringe worthy moments happen, we each have a “no” bin in our closet. As the seasons change or when they are full I round them up. I found some great local non profits in town to donate majority of the items to. I have sold a few of the higher price point items. Sometimes if I know someone in my life really appreciated an item I will give it to them. For example my mom had been eyeing one of my Save the Stork sweatshirts for years. When it was time for that item to go I shared it with her.
This system also helps me keep the kids stocked with items that actually fit. Before I did this, there have been many times I look in their drawers over flowing with pants, only to realize later they were all flood pants. Now at a glance, I can see their true inventory. Game changer folks!
Its a little embarrassing to admit but, before this intervention I washed every dirty item in our house and did touch a single item until we had the pile of shame. We all walked around the pile, pretending it didn’t exist. It was quite literally the clothes elephant in the room. Mornings were spent hunting through the pile, followed by a family shower in wrinkle spray before leaving the house.
Now this seems like it shouldn’t have taken me 30+ years to figure out a solution, but it did. In my roles I as an internal trainer, I learned to chunk information for people into small easy to process groups. Otherwise they glaze over. I took this concept and applied it to my laundry. Before I was taking on the whole house of laundry. Now I only need to tackle one hamper at a time, which is much less daunting.
I have a lined hamper for each person, one on our main floor for creepers, and two plastic ones in the laundry room for whites and towels/sheets. I couldn’t find any good links for the kind I like, but I found most of them at Homegoods. I do wash all colors and textures together except whites, I am a rebel like that. It is mom survival. If an item is too delicate to handle my system it’s too complicated for my house!
This is so simple!
I love this for a few reasons: no more dividing up the giant sock pile and no more dingy socks. My oldest, my husband, and myself have feet within centimeters of each other. Dividing up the socks was driving me crazy! I would procrastinate on the white load just to avoid the darn socks. Now, everyone gets black, gray, or colored socks that stay with their designated load! I literally donated every single white sock in my house. Now, that white load is a breeze. I love white so majority is mine with a few of my husbands undershirts.
They are so cheap and they stack neatly when they aren’t in us. Why did it take me years to buy more? Please tell me I’m not the only one?!? I have six baskets that stay stacked in front of the dryer. Once a load is dry I fold the items that need it and just lay the hanging ones flat on the top. I tuck them in their designated room, and put them away when I get the chance. Even if I don’t get to it right away I can “hide” the clean laundry and find what we need quickly in a pinch.
This girl does not iron. This post is all about simple right, that’s way too complicated!
My husband introduced me to this wrinkle spray. He was the domestic one for the first several years of our marriage. This spray is better than any brand I have ever tried. It is a must have item to pack for any trips. We do have this steamer. We keep ready to go in our master bathroom. With a 40 seconds to warm up its perfect for our busy mornings. It gets at formal wear a little better than the spray and is awesome for sheets and curtains.
Well, this wraps up my 5 laundry game changers. Hope these can simplify your routine and help you make room for the things that really matter most to you!
